Medication Administration Aids

Dose Administration Aids (DAAs) organise your medicines to help you take the right pills at the right time. They have special compartments that hold each of your solid medicines (tablets and capsules) labelled to show you the day and what time of the day you should take them. Your DAA is packed specifically for you by your Capital Chemist Community Pharmacist based on information provided by you and your GP. The pharmacist will be happy to answer any questions that you might have about your DAA. You, your GP and your pharmacist work as a team to monitor your use of the DAA.

Capital Chemist offers the Webster-pak as their choice of Dose Administration Aid.

Webster-pak is a safe and simple medication pack. It sets out all the tablets and capsules that need to be taken at each particular time of the day, for each day of the week. This makes it easy to manage medication. The pharmacist takes the doctor’s prescriptions and dispenses the medication into a blister pack. This pack is securely sealed so the medication is protected and there is a reduced chance of spilling or mixing up your medications.

The pack lists all the contents plus any other medications taken, providing vital information for hospital or ambulance staff in the case of an emergency.

When it is time to take the medication, the person or carer simply pushes out the contents of the blister through the foil backing for the correct time on the correct day. Webster-pak provides a visual cue, so you always know where you are up to. It is as easy as that!

Dose Administration Aids for DVA clients

The department of veterans’ affairs is now subsidising a Dose Administration Aid (DAA) to all eligible DVA card holders.

The Dose Administration Aid (DAA) Service aims to help veterans, war widows and other DVA clients safely and easily manage their medicines under the care of their doctor and pharmacist.

A DAA is essentially a compartmentalised device that stores multiple medications according to a dose schedule. They are a simple way of ensuring that you take the right dose of the right medicine at the right time.

Veterans who are eligible and who will benefit from the DAA Service will have their DAA packed by their pharmacist each week.  The pharmacist will also work in consultation with your doctor to assess your suitability for the service and to monitor your medication usage.

Eligibility Criteria for the Service:

  1. Veterans must hold a Gold, White or Orange Repatriation Card.
  2. Veterans must be living in the community and not residing in a Residential Care Facility.

The DAA Service provides veterans, war widows and other eligible DVA clients a DAA at no cost. This is provided in conjunction with the ongoing care of their doctor and pharmacist. Please note that DAA prescriptions do not count towards the safety net. DVA pays the doctor and pharmacist for providing your DAA Service.

The need for a DAA may be identified by the veteran, carer, community nurse, GP or pharmacist.
